This hat was meant to be an adult sized hat but somehow when it was finished it became a child sized hat. It is brown virgin wool and navy blue wool.

A Third Hat

Just a quick Wool-Ease hat to tuck in with a box of slipper socks for the Ships Project. Got all the holiday knitting done on time, plus some late December birthday knitting, and am finishing everything on needles to clear the decks for some KAL's in January. Have been enjoying seeing everyone's hats!

Hats #4 & 5

I'm actually late posting these, since I finished them well before Christmas - just haven't had a spare second! Anyway, I'm now 2/3 of the way to my second hat trick! Yahoo!

This is the first hat I finished, shown here with my dog, Rennie. I tried to get her to model it, but she only wanted to chew on it, so this was the best we could do:

This tam, which I made for my cousin, was based on the basic tam pattern in "The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns." I used a spiral design on top with a little bobble to finish it off, but you can't tell that very well the picture; plus, the yarn doesn't make it very obvious.

Need Help

I am trying to knit Marnie MacLean's Halley's Comet and I am a little confused. I am a total newbie to reading charts first of all so that might explain my confusion.

It says to cast on eight stitches and distribute over four dpns. That I get. But in the chart it only shows one stitch. Should I be reading the chart as each stitch increases seperately or should I be reading the chart as it is charted for one needle. (I hope that isn't too confusing.) Because if the chart shows the way it should be worked for each needle it would be only four stitches cast on.

So I guess my question would be is each stitch worked seperate of itself? If someone gets that mighty confusing question I would love so help. TIA.

Is It a Tam or a Large Pin Cushion?

I wish I had a digital camera to share a picture of the hat I finished today. This one's for me--a scarlet tam, slightly felted for a thicker, warmer fabric. I have curly hair and hate wearing close-fitting hats because they smash my hair down. So I think this one will be just right--though it's funny looking at the moment, stuffed with plastic bags to shape it.

I think this will be my last hat for the knitalong. It's been great fun seeing everybody's wonderful hats. Happy New Year, mad hatters!

Hat Trick #3

Here are hats for my 3rd Hat Trick. I thought I needed a hat for Christmas, so I found the pattern for this Christmas Tree Ornament hat. I used Paton's Classic in Red, and the hanger part is Lion Brand Lame in silver, triple stranded.


The hats below are Christmas gifts. They are knit from the Basic Cable pattern in SnB Nation. I did 2 more pattern repeats to lenghten the hat. I used Lion Brand Fishermans Wool for both of these hats.

Hat number 8 in the bag!

Modeled here by my ginormous snow globe. For my dad, a simple watchmans/seamans cap made from Cascade 220. It's nice and warm. Seems a little odd to be giving him a nice wool cap when it was 95 degrees here today!!
Now I just need one more hat for my third hat trick!! I was never so competitive until I saw those little hats next to our names!!

Hat's on my mind...

Hi everyone, I'm Danielle, and this is my first post. So far I've knit 7 hats with one on the needles, and 6 more planned. The last six don't have to be done for awhile since they're mostly charity knitting.




The red one was made out of Plymouth 'Baby Alpaca Grande' using my own pattern and now belongs to my uncle. The baby hat was made out some suberwash wool using April's pattern, and will be adorning the head of my yet to be born nephew. The blue one modeled by my hubby was made with Queensland Collection 'Uruguay Chunky' using the Skye pattern from Cathy Carron's book Hip Knit Hats. It was a test run of the pattern, and I found things that I needed to change for the ones that were going to family members. The last picture shows the updated versions of that pattern. The finished striped ones all use Classic Elite Yarns' Duchess; the one on the needles is using the Uruguay Chunky again. The solid grey one is made out of Brown Sheep's 'Lambs Pride Superwash' using a simple hat pattern by Nano Pants Dance.

It's been really neat getting to see everyones finished hats!

My First Hat Trick!

Finally!! It was a little slow-going for me with my hat-knitting since I had a few other projects I was working on (plus work and school!) but I've finally finished my first hat trick! Yahoo! (And, frankly, how sad is it that getting one of those little hats by my name over there was a primary motivation for knitting furiously? :)

Anyway, here's a shot of the two I just finished:

The top hat is just a basic k2p2 ribbed hat for my little brother (he's 12); the bottom hat is Knitty's Coronet. For both hats I used Lamb's Pride worsted in Pine Shadows (M-170) on size 9s. Here's a detail of the Coronet band:


Sorry the picture's not great. I ended up blocking the whole hat after I completed it, but I'm wishing I had only blocked the band before I picked up the stitches for the rest of the hat. My instincts told me to do just that and I ignored them. Oh well, live and learn, right?

Anyway, I've got three more hats to complete before Xmas - not sure if I'm going to make it! EEK!

(Also, as an aside, I tried following the super-cool Star Hat pattern that BeadLizard posted and I couldn't get it to work - has anyone else tried it? I keep getting tripped up on the 3rd decrease row - there's an extra two knit stitches and I'm not positive what to do with them...)

2/3 of the way to a hat trick

It's meager progress, when so many of you have multiple hat tricks! But I finished a simple winter hat for my boyfriend. We sat and figured it out, and it's the sixth (6th) hat I've made for him in about as many years. He's lost all but one. I'm going to hold out hope on this one.

Debbie Bliss Cashmerino in dark grey. No pattern, just, you know, cast on 120 stitches, work in k1p1 rib until it seems time to decrease, decrease evenly, then be done. I think it matches the shape of his head quite nicely, and the color will match his coat. Success! See another picture on my blog, if you're interested.

Above is Hat number four! I am hoping to get two more done before December is over so I can get myself another Hat Trick! The hat is an adult sized hat that is made from leftover Chenille Thick and Quick. It is knitted on size 11 needles. It will find a home at Warm the World.

Another day, another hat!

The seventh and final Easy Roll Brim Hat in some unknown acrylic from my stash! I have to say I like this colorway the best! So now all of Noey's friends will have warm heads for the holidays!!
I started a Watchman/Seaman's Cap for my dad a couple of days ago, using Cascade 220. It's coming along nicely and I should have it done in time for Christmas.

Great job everyone!! I love seeing everyone's hats!!

I don't think I've ever made so many hats before in my life.

I knit it out of Caron Wintuk, figuring that acrylic was best for its washability, but dang! does this make one stiff fabric or what. There's gotta be other acrylic yarns with better drape.

I'll probably be signing off from this KAL for a while, so I just wanted to thank our fantastic hosts, Amanda and Laura, for all their work into making this a roaring success, and for their thoughtful comments on all of our projects!

My first contribution

It took me long enough, but i finally made my first hat of the knitalong. it's the hermione cable and bobble hat from atypically knit. i whipped it out in one evening. i would highly recommend the pattern to anyone...it was so much fun to knit. details can be found on my blog

Seeing double

Yes, it just so happens that I knit two of the same hats. And I am also going to knit another kitty ville hat! I guess I just liked the pattern so much, I had to make it again......

So any ways, here are my two Nautilus hats (pattern by Marnie MacLean). They turned out beautifuly. The spirals are cute, and the yarn (Bernat Satin in Snow) used is soft and warm! I also manged to get two hats (barely!) from one skein.

The smaller one (shown from top to show awsome spiral!) is for a friend that is paying for it, the larger one (shown flat) is a christmas gift for a dear family friend. I may add a flower to the seccond one, I think it would be cute!

two hats for baby-abby

whipped up these two little hats for little baby abigail, the first grandchild of an oh-so-kind woman who works for my husband. they will surely keep her little noggin warm this winter!

the one on the left is lion brand landscarpes and the one on the right is two strands of supersoft acrylic (i think carons?).
perfectly cozy for a baby!

Hat Number Two

Another quick teacher gift. The cables on the crown don't show very well in the photo, but it's just a cross every other pair, then start crossing the pairs between, ssk and k1tog to eat up the purl ditches, etc. We've filled it with bags chocolate-toffee almonds and chocolate-covered espresso beans (hey, a hat is a gift bag too!). I did post the pattern for the Star Hat to my blog since a few people asked.

ode to karabella bulky

o aurora, so soft and bulky;

not sure if it's a proper ode, but this karabella aurora bulky is so becoming my new fave for hats. not so much bang for the buck, but it knits up super soft and yummy you just have to give it a try.
just a note: although this is a great shot of the pattern, it seems little-miss-crawls-a-lot was a bit too close to the flash and the color has not been done justice. it is a deeper charcoal grey - there's a better pic on my blog, it's an action shot of its hasty removal - how DO you keep a hat on a baby?

Another Hat done

I got this little beanie done last night. This one is for my nephew I have 3 more hats to go and then I am done for a few weeks! I used Cascasde 220 and size 8 addies for this one. Back to knitting!

Hat trick that is! Here is a mother/daughter set in LB Chenille Thick & Quick (I am modeling the mother version) and one in LB Wool Ease Thick & Quick...my new 2 favorite best friends...along with my size 15 needles. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I have maybe 2 more hats, a few scarves to finish up and one wrap from Wrap Style and then I am done, done, done with Christmas gifts. Then I can unapologetically knit for just me :) There is a Suss Design wrap cardigan pattern calling my name

Star Hat

Had some fun playing with cables and made a star on the crown. Took a wrong turn and ended up with something much nicer than the plain old pinwheel I'd planned. It's subtle enough for DD's teacher to wear, but he will also appreciate the complexity.

OK, so I haven't been very good at posting, mostly because once I decided to start making hats I ended up knitting scarves. Go figure. :-P

Anyway, so here's a hat and scarf I made based on this pattern from Marnie MacLean. I don't think I made it quite long enough, but the friend I made it for loved it, so I guess it's all good.

Hat Trick!

Here is a hat I made for my brother for Christmas. Shhh, don't tell him I wore it this morning to get a Christmas tree. Boy is it soft. It was made with a cashmere merino wool mix. The maker is unknown. It just says made in Italy. I got it at AC Moore. This is my first attempt at cables too. So I am proud of myself even if it isn't perfect. The pattern is from Headhuggers. It is an organization that makes hats for people going through cancer and who have lost their hair. So I am making one for them too since I got the free pattern from them. 

Two more hats complete...only two more to go.

Umbilical Cord Hat

This is the second hat for me -- an umbilical cord hat for my friend's soon-to-be-arriving baby.



I love how it came out. The yarn is Gedifra Fashion Trend Fino Stripe.

yay hooray - hat trick today!

so proud am i to have earned an oh-so-cute-hat-trick-hat next to my name in the sidebar by completing the first of 2 father/son hat sets. they are for my brother and "i'm-almost-3" nephew. knitted with 2 strands of deep navy karabella aurora 4 and heathered khaki aurora 8 (1 strand) in an understated rib (since they are ultra-conservative-i-mean-bumper-sticker-go-to-fundraisers-conservative) with a little stripey detail for added spice (me thinks they need a little spice).

btw...love LOVE that yarn, people. you must give it a go!

Hat 2 is done

The hat I've been promising to knit for my husband is finally done. He even agreed to model it for me - although he was a bit camera shy!!
The pattern was "Kim's Hats" from Last Minute Knitted Gifts. I used Knit Picks Merino Style in Coal, Moss and Fog. One more hat to a hat trick! Up next, a stocking cap for my crazy friend.

Hat Trick Numero Trois!

Woo Hoo! TWO more finished hats! That makes *9* total! I can't believe it - and none of them are for me. :(

Felted hat for The Man:

Pattern - my own based on the Fisherman's Hat from the Knitting Pattern a Day Calendar.
Yarn - Knitpicks Wool of the Andes
Needles - Sz US 10.5 Brittany Bamboo DPNs
Mods/Thoughts - I followed The Man's stripe sequence, and knit until I thought it would be long enough. If I made it again I'd make it a bit longer, but I have no desire for a felted hat (just not the same snugness), that may be a while.
It's taking FOREVER to dry, and I hope he hasn't seen it hiding under the craft table.

Bunny hat:

This is a gift for one of my BFFs who is preggers.
Pattern - Target Kit
Yarn - Some cotton acrylic blend - in the kit
Needles - Plastic sz US 7 in the kit
Mods/Thoughts - I really don't like the way the ears look, if I made this again I'd use the Stitch 'n Bitch Nation pattern. It is seamed, and I think it'd be better in the round. But it is cute and washable. Also, they provided embroidery thread to do the face and it would have taken hours going over and over again to get a good "thickness" for the details. So I used stash black acrylic. They also gave no direction for "how" it should look, so I just used my imagination! I think it looks pretty cute.

More hats will be coming, hopefully one for me!

Number 9 done

This is crazy I have been making hats like their going out of style. Everyone I know is going to have a nice warm head this winter! I used red heart brown and orange this one is for my nephew Matthew his mom loves the Cleveland Browns. My best friend asked me to make her daughter a hat today so I still have 4 more to go. Maybe I will be done with these soon!
