Cover Your Head Knitalong

Monday, January 30, 2006

Here is a hat that I finished the other day. This is my first hat since joining this KAL. It's part of a set for my sister for Christmas (yes, late, I know, but she understands as I had a lot of knitting for Christmas and I got the ones that I wouldn't see for a while done first.). I also finished her Wrist Warmers that match the hat last night. I am working on her scarf that will match at the moment.

Yarn: Wool-Ease Worsted Weight

Color: White Multi 301

Pattern: Stitch n Bitch Nation "Basic Cable"

Amount Used: Less than one 2.5 oz ball

Hi all! I am new and love making hats. I made a few for Christmas. I made one for my Grandma, both Grandpas, Uncle, Dad, Sister, a friend's child and one for her soon to be born baby. I still have loads to do for Christmas presents that I didn't get done. So I'll be cranking them out as fast as I can in between school, work, tutoring and other projects I have started. Glad to be a part of the group.

Here are the hats that I made already for Christmas gifts and non Christmas...

Stash Hat

Otherwise known as Hat Number 11. This is an exact duplicate to one I made earlier (although this one is a little smaller). I intended this one to be for Head Huggers, but Noey has claimed as her own. I still have more of this yarn left so I'll start another one!

Next up is a London Beanie, thanks to our host (see below). I have some leftover Cascade 220 in my stash that might look nice.

New hat...no.2!

This hat was originally designed and knitted some time ago. Had a few requests for the pattern (after I'd sold the original!) and so reworked it and wrote down what I did (really should remember to write my patterns down more often!)

It uses 100g of Debbie Bliss Maya and is yummily soft. Ideal for wearing with pony-tails or as a normal hat; the drawstring feature adds a bit of versatility! Any yarn that fits the gauge will do; a slightly chunky merino is perfect.

Pattern can be found here along with more photos.

Happy hatty days ;)

and another one!

I hadn't planned on making another hat so soon, but one of the guys that works for my husband just had brain surgery (yikes!) and subsequently his head has been shaved. He mentioned to DH that his head gets cold, and DH told him "My wife can make you a hat in no time!". So here it is. The pattern is Just Your Basic Beanie, and I used Cascade 220 from my stash. It really is just a basic 3x2 rib, pretty easy, but nice to do something a little different.
It felt really good to knit something for someone who really needs it! Now I want to some charity knitting!

P.S. Doug is doing fine now and he's back at work.

London Beanie

Here's the hat I made for the hubby over the holidays. It wasn't a Christmas gift, it was just a "he wanted a hat and I've got a long car ride" hat. :) I used one skein of Debblie Bliss Cashmerino Aran (black) and a tiny bit of Cashmerino DK (tan). The pattern is the London Beanie. I started with a tubular cast-on which looked nice, but he felt it was a little tight. Everything loosened up nicely after washing, though. I think it's his new favorite (and the man has no hair, so hats are important)!

Also, the Girl Talk hats I knitted before Christmas had their final felting & fitting. They turned out really cute. :)

My Hat of Choice

Here is my recently completed My Hat of Choice. I found the pattern over at Soul Mama. It's knitted in Manos del Uruguay in Bing Cherry on size 9 circs and dps.

My Hat of Choice turned out to be a quick knit. It's quite warm despite all of the little yo holes. The Manos del Uruguay is so soft and fun to knit.

I'm seriously considering knitting up a little one for my little girl so we can have matching Mother/Daughter hats again.

I'm covered

I joined this KAL after finishing my first hat. I'm hooked.

I modified this pattern using Zitron Loft. Yummy yarn, fun knit.
More views and details on my blog.
(I even wore the hat on my walk this morning. Yes, Mom, I wore a HAT!)

Love seeing all the hats and patterns here!

Coming out of lurkdom with 3 hats

I joined a while ago, but this is my first post (bad me). I have been very inspired by looking at everyone's great hats, and I figured it's about time I get off my butt and post what I've been up to.

So, here are a couple hats I made during my Christmas knitting rush. They are based on the Candy Cane hat pattern in Handknit Holidays. They are both made with leftover Cascade 220 on US7's. More details on these here. I really like this pattern, so I may make some more of these.

Here's another hat I made as a Christmas present. It is the Ribbed Cap from Vogue Knitting Caps & Hats Two. I used Noro Kureyon, color 163 on US7's. Love those colors.

Happy hat-making everyone!

Number Nine!

Finished this little cutie last night. I used Koigu KPPPM with a pattern by Knitting at Knoon. It's for baby Isabella. My friend Michael, and his wife just had their first child. They live in Chicago, so I figured a wool hat was in order!

Warm Double Knit Goodness

I recently finished a Warm A** Hat for my husband in Cascade 220, black and a gray tweed knitted on size 6 circs and dps.

Since it's double knit either side can be the 'right' side be it the Dark Side...

...or the Light Side.

I knit it with the tweed facing out and the black facing in. Now that it's finished the hubby's been favoring the Dark Side.

my first hat trick!

I made my dad a new winter hat that will hopefully be tight enough for him--he says the last one slowly loosened up, and he likes his hats snug. I knit it up on New Year's Day but left it on the needles until today, when I knew he was coming to visit, so I could get him to try it on. He liked it, so I finished it on the spot!

First finished hat since joining!

I am a prolific hat maker, as you'll soon find out ;)

This is another of my own designs, that was intended to be a tester for different design but developed into something interesting itself. It took less than 100g, with a gauge on 5mm needles of 17/18 sts to 10cm/4" on stocking stitch or 14/15 sts to 10cm/4" on Moss/Seed stitch (you'll have to get used to my English terminology ;)

I have written and posted the full pattern here. And to Deborah, who found my beret pattern, please, please knit it so I can see a different version of it! That pattern hasn't been public long, and haven't yet seen it knitted up by anyone else.

Happy hatty weekend ;)

Here's my Hat Trick!

I did this little baby hat in a little over 2 hours. It was my last FO of 2005-started and completed on December 31st!

Pattern: Umbilical Cord Hat from SnB, sans cord (I think this is my 6th one-love this pattern!)
Yarn: Bernat Cotton Tots

Newbie and Pixie hat

Hello all! I'm new to your group, so thought I'd write a quick message and share a hat I've just finished. I was inspired by the Pixie Ribbed hat but found the sizing to be too small on the pattern, so adapted it. It's made from Rowan Big Wool for the main body (which took less than an hour to knit) with some oddments for the crochet trim.

I've a complete woolly hat fetish, and tend to design my own.. well I start knitting with a lose idea in mind and see what develop's on the needles ;)
Photos of some previous creations can be found here and my blog found here.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's wonderful hat magic!

Flowers, Take 2

Deep in the throes of flapperphilia, I had to make another Flowers on a Grave, this time with the proper cloche shape:

Somewhere in Time

The flowers are just little cutouts from Hobby Lobby felt that I sewed together. The vintage cloche at this site served as inspiration.

Hat on!!

Red and blue duo

I finished this weekend. The hats are post christmas presents for my colleagues who love skiing. I am sure they will look great in them :) Sorry for the blurry photo.

Hat #4

I finished another hat just before New Year's. It was made from one of the JoAnns Sensations yarns - I think it's called Fever. at any rate, it comes in skein form and has beads interspersed throughout. Colors are fushia at the bottom and black at the top (with a Fibonacci-esque 1-1-2-3 stripe sequence where they join). I had started using a pattern from a recent Cast On magazine, but ended up finishing it based on the Knitters Handy Book of Patterns hat pattern (cuz Cast On got packed while moving into our house). I had started making it for me, but by the time I was close to finishing it, realized it was way too big. (lack of gauge swatch is to blame). Turns out that my mom loves it, and fits just the way she likes (cuz, as she says, she doesn't wear hats the way most people do).

Unfortunately, there's no photo at this time, since the computer still hasn't been set up and we have no internet at home and the pic I took is still in the camera.

in other hat news:
my Tychus hat is making progress - I'm somewhere in the 3rd wedge, so about half-way finished. I also started a hat for my sister just before new year's and am 2/3s finished with it - will probably get it finished on the busride home tonight or tomorrow.

It's about time . . .

that I finished my third hat and finally earned a Hat Trick!! This one took me a while, partially because it's so big and partially because it got set aside while I worked on holiday knitting.

Ever since I took up knitting earlier this year, my friend Dave has been begging me to make him "a hat like Ralphie's brother Randy wore at the Christmas Parade". So, without further ado, I give you the crazy hat for Dave (or the hat for Crazy Dave).

It's based on this pattern, but I modified it to knit in the round. The hat in the movie had a pom-pom, but I opted for the tassel instead. Dave didn't care what colors it was, so I used stash yarn left over from my second hat (Merino Style in Fog and Moss and Wool of the Andes in Cranberry - all from Knit Picks). For the full effect, you have to see it on. I wanted to give it to Dave on New Year's Eve and have him model it, but he didn't make it to the party. So Pea was happy to model for me!!

Hat Tricks All Around!

Sorry I've been such a slacker, dear hatknitters. I didn't realize my brain would take such a long vacation, too! I have caught up and given a hat icon to everyone who achieved a hat trick. If I have missed you, please let me know. What wonderful hats everyone is making!
--Amanda

Green hat

This is my hat modeled by my nephew. The yarn is from czech republic, forgot the name and the pattern is very simple, made up as I knitted.
I started on 60 stitches on circular needle with 2x2 rib for about 3 cm, then continued stockinete stitches. After10 cm I started shaping the top, divided the stitches in 4 parts, and every other row I knit following: *2 togetherm 2 knit, 2 together, 9 knit*. And that is all :)

Perfect 10

OK, so not all the hats were perfect, but you get the idea!
I finished my 10th hat last week, and the first one for me!!

Details:
Pattern: Modified Basic Cable/Irish Walking Hat
Yarn: Knitpicks Wool of the Andes in Cherry Blossom, about 1.25 skeins
Needles: Sz 8 Clover DPNs
Dates: Monday January 26-Wednesday January 28.
Mods: Several - added some more ribbing to the bottom and did 6 pattern repeats and one extra cable section.
Thoughts: Not long enough to fold up, and still a bit too big.

My sister has been clamoring for one of these since I made the first one, so she picked out some yarn this week, and I'll be casting on for hers soon!

FINALLY! a Hat Trick

I finally finished a third hat last night. Oddly enough, it's not any one of the severeal hats that have been on needles or in planning for some time.

It's the Basic Cable hat from SnB Nation, done in Noro Kureyon #134, and it's all for me!
